Oil Coast Jewelry
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill created the biggest enviromental castrophy in maritime history. An estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil was released into the Gulf of Mexico. Spreading oil began to wash up on the beaches of the Gulf Coast, shutting down tourist destinations, destroying local economies.
At this time, a recent highschool graduate was walking the beach with her famaly where the family would spend each summer. But this summer, there would be no boating, fishing or swimming. Her last summer before going off to college and she could only look at the globs of oil on the beach, but she realized that this was historic and must be preserved so people will never forget what happened here.
She had made resin jewelry before and thought this would be a great way to preserve and seal samples of this oil. Each piece of jewelry is designed and hand made with imbedded oil, collected on the beaches of Dauphin Island.
